The best leisurewear looks in 2021 Leave a comment

(Chic) sweatpants and sneakers for the win.

One of the (rare) high points of 2020 was that we relaxed our wardrobes and wore whatever the hell we wanted at home which, frankly, is a mood we want to extend into this year and beyond.

We’ve seen everyone from Instagram it-girls and celebrities to women in politics making the case for comfort dressing – and we have not one objection.

Matching knitwear sets have taken over our Instagram feeds. We’ve retired five-inch heels in favour of flats. And never before have we seen such a dizzying array of matching tracksuits à la Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber or relaxed slouchy suits, which Em Rata made look so darn sexy and chic.

Let’s not forget that comfort dressing has garnered vice-presidential support, with Kamala Harris frequently seen in sneakers with black jeans and a blazer.

Here are four wardrobe essentials that will take your style to a Netflix-approved level of comfort.

Hoodies and sweatshirts have long been worn outside of sports and this year, can make more of a style statement than ever with this ‘borrowed-your-boyfriend’s-jumper’ look. We’re taking our cues from Hailey Bieber and Rita Ora who mixed it up and threw hers on under a leather motorcycle jacket. Ariana Grande has been known to wear dress-length hoodies, sans trousers and knee-high boots, taking the hoodie trend to a whole other level of cool.

You can go bold and branded with options from the likes of Gucci or Supreme, or opt for discreet, logo-less designs from Les Tien for a compliment-worthy kit.

A good sneaker is a wardrobe non-negotiable in 2021. Sneakers are now acceptable with so much more than active wear – and we’re on board with any piece that we can take use from the yoga studio to the office. We’ve seen them worn with everything from tailored pants (think Zendaya) to maxi wrap dresses (as seen on Selena Gomez), during the work week, during your commute or off duty.

ECCO’s new Zipflex sneakers tick the sartorial box and are suitable for both hiking trails and urban environs. Not only do they look smart with their street-style aesthetic, they are also incredibly lightweight and flexible. Plus, they’re totally breathable and the design offers good stability – for any and all terrain you find yourself tackling in a day. No change of shoe required.
We welcome the rise of the slouchy, comfortable suit with open arms and chic sneakers on foot. Gone are the days of rigid tailoring and blazers that feel more like wearing cardboard cut-outs than actual clothes. Australian womenswear label E Nolan has mastered this laid-back yet polished look, while the likes of Acne Studios and Isabel Marant are still making boyfriend blazers a must have forever – which are oh so easy to throw on with a pair of straight leg jeans.

Since the beginning of the first lockdowns last year, matching knitwear sets have flooded our Instagram feeds (and shopping carts) for a good reason; they feel like pyjamas while keeping the polished appearance of an office-approved outfit.

Making our 2021 style more chic – but equally comfortable – are the likes of Frankie Shop, LouLou Studio and Camilla & Marc, whose current collection of loungewear features neutral hues and relaxed tailoring. You can easily smarten up the look with a sleek low bun, just as the ever-gorgeous Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has many times over. So. Very. Chic.
