The jumpers are tucked away, blankets are lighter and the air conditioner stays on longer than before—welcome to spring 2021. While your body care routine may have simply been restricted to using a moisturiser in the cooler months, your arms and legs need more love through the warmer season. How you shower and what you apply during and after can make all the difference to keep everything from dryness to body acne at bay. Here’s your complete guide to bodycare in the summer, straight from the experts.

The pre-shower routine to try now

Since most bodycare tends to be centred around your shower, it only makes sense that the ideal routine involves, pre-, in- and post-shower steps. “If you have dry skin, apply oil before you bathe and then cleanse gently,” says Delhi-based Dr Kiran Sethi, integrative aesthetic specialist and founder, Isyaderm. If you don’t normally have dry skin but you’re dealing with some of it while transitioning between seasons, using a light layer of oil right before you shower can make all the difference. “Once a week, you can also incorporate dry brushing into your pre-shower routine to promote blood circulation and get rid of any dead skin build-up,” she says. 

For a little easy massage, circle your hands around the ankle and slide to up while pressing as you work upwards. This can help you drain excess fluid and leave your legs looking—and feeling lighter. If you have the time, lie on the floor with your legs up against the valves, which takes the pressure off too.

Your ideal in-shower skincare routine

Come summer and heat rashes and body acne tag along by default as well. “Make sure you use an antiseptic body wash with benzoyl peroxide in it,” says Dr Sethi. “If you tend to be dry-skinned, wash with gentle cleansers like the FCL Oat Silk Soap Free Body Wash. Don’t shower longer than five minutes and use lukewarm water to prevent your skin from further drying out.” If you have an uneven skin tone, Dr Sethi recommends using ingredients like AHAs, Vitamin C, alpha arbutin, kojic acid and retinol in your body care products, and she trusts benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and retinol if you’re dealing with body acne.

As you walk out of the cold, it’s also key that you shed the dry, dead cells that have accumulated over the months to prep and prime your skin. “It’s important to help your skin in the process of its cell turnover by gently exfoliating your body once per week,” says Boston-based Dr Sarina Elmariah, dermatologist, Massachusetts General Hospital, and scientific advisor, Evereden. “This will help to reveal newer skin, which then makes it easier to nourish and hydrate the skin that needs it, versus just dead skin cells.” Bree Johnson, co-founder of Australian beauty brand Frank Body agrees. “Exfoliating can brighten skin and soften pigmentation. I exfoliate my body a few times a week because it targets stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, acne, cellulite and leaves your skin feeling soft, smooth and hydrated.” Johnson also recommends leaving the scrub on your body for a few minutes after you work it into your skin to get the most out of the ingredients. “You can even pop on a hair mask while you wait!” If you’re worried you won’t remember exfoliating your body, Dr Elmariah recommends simply doing it on the days you exfoliate your face—however, make sure to not exceed twice a week to avoid over-drying your skin, face or body.
