Are you pregnant and suddenly at a loss for how to dress your new body? And what is this ‘maternity clothing’ you now have to choose from? It’s very easy to drown in a swamp of jersey when you’re growing a small human. And no one tells you that your back expands and your legs change shape. The key to everything is comfort.
Now, this doesn’t mean you have to become a walking advert for leggings and t-shirts. In addition to the brands specialising in pregnancy style, lots of high street shops also have voluminous dress styles that don’t feel ‘maternity-ish’ at all – in a good way. H&M is my go-to for dresses in my non-pregnant state and I’ve found that many of the styles I wore pre-baby are the same ones I am buying now, and will continue to wear after the bump has vanished.
Best maternity clothing:
- JoJo Maman Bebe
- Urban outfitters
Second hand shops and vintage sites should be your new BFF too, think of all the cool oversized men’s vintage tees and slouchy trench coats that could see you through seasons post babe’s arrival. Also, your feet may well swell towards the end, but make the most of the time they’re at their more familiar size and wear all of your favourite shoes instead of those old Birkenstocks hiding under the sofa. I found it useful when working out how to dress my new shape to go through my existing clothes and put away anything that won’t fit during these nine months. Another thing I’d recommend is looking to your favourite pregnant icons for style inspiration: my muse is Chloë Sevigny, the queen of vintage clothes styling.
Best maternity brands
ASOS is our go-to for so many wardrobe heroes. Their maternity range came highly recommended, and didn’t disappoint.
This is my ultimate destination for knickers, especially during pregnancy. They now have a very stylish range of face masks, another pregnancy essential.
H&M are the best at voluminous stylish non-maternity dresses that will see you through bump time and beyond. The brand is also great for maternity denim.
4. JoJo Maman Bebe
Top of a pregnant woman’s shopping list, JoJo Maman Bebe, has all the essentials for you and your new little human.
You can always rely on Topshop to serve it up, their maternity range just feels like an extension of all their good stuff, but with your bump in mind.
Need a dress? Ghost has a dress for literally any occasion and it is a joy to discover that a lot of their styles will also house your changing bod.
7. Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters is THE place to get cool lounge wear. While you’re with bump, I’d also recommend looking at the menswear and vintage offerings.
The home of luxury fashion has all kinds of pieces that will accommodate your new shape and, if all else fails, you can just buy a new handbag.
Selfridges has such a good range of brands, from high end to high street, so you can get everything in one place for you and bub.
Etsy is the home of vintage, handmade and smaller businesses so you can be sure you’re wearing something no one else has.
Vestiaire has all the designer pieces at a fraction of the price. Search for designers that make styles in looser shapes and shop them specifically, or search for pieces made in stretchy fabric. So chic, so cheap!
