There was drama on the runway last week when one queen strutted out in a look that gave fans déjà vu, but did Olivia Lux really mean to copy Symone?
The queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race are known for their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, but one thing they’re not know for is stealing looks. Season 13 has many strong competitors, but viewers were surprised last week when one of the queens came out in an outfit that looked a little too familiar.
Season 13 started with a bang, and the first two episodes centered around a surprising All Stars-type twist. The queens were asked to lip-sync for their lives on their very first day, and were then separated into the winners group and the “Pork Chop” group. Symone and Olivia Lux both came out on top in their respective lip sync battles and landed in the winners group. In episode 2, the winners showed off their best looks in a Lamé You Stay runway category. Symone stunned the judges in a red boxing-inspired outfit—”It’s very smart,” Michelle commented, while guest judge Jamal Sims added, “the whole thing works.” Flash forward to episode 5, when during the Mixed Bag runway category Olivia Lux strutted out in…a boxing-inspired outfit…but pink.

Olivia Lux ended up being safe in episode 5, so RuPaul and the judges didn’t comment on her look, but fans online were quick to pick up on the error. “Sooo are we just ignoring the fact that Olivia’s boxing look was literally Symone’s look but in a different color,” one Redditor commented. Others noted the similarity and wondered why it was so similar to what another queen wore just a few episodes earlier. “Olivia could’ve at least worn a different wig,” another user commented. “It took me a couple of seconds to realize this isn’t Symone wearing her same boxer outfit.”
Fans noticed the similarities, but they didn’t blame Olivia Lux for it. In the early days of RuPaul’s Drag Race, it seemed like every challenge was a sewing challenge, but in the modern era, queens get a heads up from production before filming begins of what the runway themes will be. This allows the queens to put their best drag on display rather than struggle to put something amazing together week after week. “Olivia looked great,” a user said, “but her second look may have been a bit too similar to Symone’s boxing look. Not Olivia’s fault, but some bad luck!” This isn’t the first time queens have gotten in trouble because in this way. In season 10, Miz Cracker and Kameron Michaels had to scramble through the clothes they brought for a surprise runway challenge. They obviously pulled outfits for a Prehistoric challenge, and were chastised for how poorly they fit in with the assigned challenge.
It would seem that Ru kept this in mind, because none of the judges pointed out the similarity between Symone and Olivia Lux’s outfits. As of now, this RuPaul’s Drag Race controversy has been resolved, no harm, no foul.
