The Best On-Screen Portrayals Of Diana, Princess Of Wales Through The Years Leave a comment

An inordinate number of Hollywood stars have attempted to portray Diana, Princess of Wales for film and television – but only a few performances have been truly noteworthy. With the 25th anniversary of the late royal’s death coming up in 2022, however, a fresh range of on-screen tributes are in the works. Below, Vogue breaks them down, and lists the People’s Princess biopics worth revisiting in the meantime.

The Crown is, of course, known for its impeccable casting – and Netflix’s decision to tap up-and-comer Emma Corrin to play the starriest of the Windsors in season four proved genius. Naturally, the 25-year-old Cambridge graduate did ample research before donning meticulous recreations of Diana’s impossibly frothy ’80s wedding dress and a suite of feathery blonde wigs – from watching Diana: In Her Own Words “about a hundred times” to speaking with Diana’s former private secretary, Patrick Jephson.

Neon has only just released the first photographs for Spencer, but the buzz around director Pablo Larraín’s depiction of a fateful weekend in Diana’s life is already building. The drama will take place over the course of three days in 1991, when the Princess joined the royal family for a traditional Christmas at Sandringham, only to decide once and for all that she needed to end her marriage. Stay tuned for casting announcements for Princes Charles, William, and Harry.

Elizabeth Debicki will take over from Emma Corrin as Diana in The Crown

Elizabeth Debicki in ‘The Crown’, Season 5

Has there ever been a more perfect casting than that of doe-eyed former ballerina Elizabeth Debicki as Lady Di? Not only is she a trained dancer (one of the royal’s great passions), she perfected her RP on the set of Vita & Virginia (2018), stands over 6ft tall, and will look undeniably fabulous in a Revenge Dress. Debicki called it her “true privilege and honour” to be taking over from Emma Corrin in Peter Morgan’s “masterful” The Crown. The pressure is on, but something tells us Debicki will deliver.

Naomi Watts as the royal in 2013’s Diana

In all the breathless anticipation that surrounded newcomer Emma Corrin’s portrayal of Princess Diana’s early years in season 4 of The Crown, one could almost forget that a certain Australian slipped into the late royal’s Jimmy Choos seven years earlier. Naomi Watts played the People’s Princess in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana (2013), which charted the two years leading up to her untimely death in 1997. The project was plagued with problems from the outset, and ultimately excoriated by critics. Watts, who pored over archival footage and wore clothes belonging to Diana in her efforts to inhabit the role, later said she was “seduced” by the opportunity to play such a fantastic character, but added: “With risk, there is every chance it’s going to fail. If you have to go down with that sinking ship, so be it.” One for true royal obsessives only.
